Ask An Expert: How To Wear Cool-Toned Lipstick

Candice is wearing Great Pink Planet

“Dear Candice,

My skin colour has a yellow undertone (typical Asian skintone) and because of that I can’t seem to make cool toned lipstick to work on me. It looks somewhat off whenever I try to wear it out so I can only dabble it on. Is there any way it could work for me and maybe some lipstick colours that I could try on?”

Actually, you CAN wear cool pinks. Before you give up on the lipsticks, try the following:

* Get a cool-pink blush that isn’t too deep. A pop of a cool pink on the apples of the cheeks can really make the cool pink lips “fit in” a lot better rather than look like they clash with your skin tone.

* Get a lip concealer. Many asians have a darker border around their lips, and that bit of discoloration can show through lipsticks that aren’t opaque. It makes any paler or brighter lip look quite uneven and tacky.

* Run a lip concealer over the parts of your lips that are darker, and then smooth away the excess with your fingers so you get a more even color all over.

* Go for a creme formula rather than a frost, as these are more opaque. Don’t be afraid of the stronger blue pinks like MAC Snob, Revlon Pink Pout, etc. Rimmel Pink Blush is more of a neutral pink than a real blue-based pink, so you might be pleasantly surprised by the real deal.

* Go for a deeper blue pink. Sometimes the contrast of yellow-based skin with a cool toned lipstick can be a bit much at the start. Try rich fuchsias like Revlon Fuchsia (Colorburst line), and don’t forget the cool pink blush to tie everything together.

Good luck!

Chinadoll Palette coming February 2012

Don’t let her milky skin, pouty mouth and flushed cheeks fool you; underneath the poised façade, there lies a heart of a tigress…

Lime Crime’s long-anticipated foray into the realm of pressed eyeshadow begins with Chinadoll. Brought to life by indie style icon Hanna Beth, this collection is not for the faint of heart with shades of flame red, sky blue, sparkling gold, deep jade and jet black bursting forth. True to Lime Crime tradition, each eyeshadow is lavishly-pigmented, creamy in texture and provides superior coverage and blendability to satisfy even the pickiest eyeshadow lover. The five hues come encased in a deluxe purple tin.

THE CHINADOLL LOOK
as created by Doe Deere, Makeup Artist & Lime Crime Founder

“Chinadoll is fragile and bold, soft-spoken and out-spoken, a free spirit of undeniable presence. I created a romantic duality by casting watercolor gradients against sharper lines — Lotus Noir was applied under lower lashes, blended into Jade-o-Lade, then faded seamlessly into Parasol. Finally, I added soft-red accents to her cheeks, brows and around the temples for an innocent glow evocative of vintage Chinese advertising posters.”

Fly Dragon Fly – fiery red [matte]
Parasol – sky blue [matte]
Goldfish – bright gold [metallic]
Jade-o-Lade – rich jade [matte]
Lotus Noir – deepest black [matte]

Vegan & Cruelty-Free. Retails for $34.99. Available starting February 15 via www.limecrimemakeup.com.

Fly Dragon Fly – vermelho ardente [matte]
Parasol – azul celeste [matte]
Goldfish – dourado brilhante [metálica]
Jade-o-Lade – jade opulento [matte]
Lotus Noir – preto muito profundo [matte]

Vegano e Cruelty-Free.
